The Virginia women’s basketball team will host Clemson on Sunday as part of the nationwide Play 4Kay initiative, aimed at raising breast cancerawareness. Named for the former N.C. State head coach Kay Yow, Play 4Kay was formerly known as the WBCA ‘Pink Zone.’ Fans are encouraged to wear pink the game and UVa will be wearing pink uniforms and shoes to raise breast cancer awareness.
The game will begin at 2 p.m., and will be streamed live by Cavaliers Live, UVa’s live audio and video streaming offering. Live statistics will be available at VirginiaSports.com, and the game will be broadcast over the airwaves on WINA 1070 AM in the Charlottesville area.
Virginia (17-8, 5-6 ACC) is coming off a road win at NC State, 55-47, on Sunday, and has five regular-season games left on the slate. Senior guard Ariana Moorer continues to lead the Cavaliers in scoring at 13.0 points per game, while sophomore guard Ataira Franklin averages 12.5 points per game.

Virginia knocks off Canisius and Drexel
GREENVILLE, N.C. — The Virginia softball team (4-0) knocked off Canisius 7-2 and shut out Drexel 14-0 in five innings Saturday as the Pirate Classic.
Junior Kristen Hawkins and sophomore Erica Cipolloni each homered twice in the win over Canisius while every Virginia starter recorded either a hit or RBI in the second game against Drexel.
Virginia concludes play in the Pirate Classic today with a 12 p.m. game against host East Carolina.
TRACK AND FIELD
Gay qualifies for NCAAs in women’s mile
Junior Morgane Gay qualified for the NCAA Championships in the women’s mile and seniors Marcus Robinson (triple jump) and Mark Amirault (men’s 3,000 meters) broke school records as the Virginia men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams completed action at the FloTrack Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., and the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
Freshman Nick Vena won the men’s shot put with a season-best throw of 18.45m (60’6.50”), the second-best mark in ‘Hoo history. Five of Vena’s six attempts surpassed his previous season-best mark (57’6.25”).
The Cavaliers return to action Feb. 23-25 for the ACC Indoor Championships in Boston.
WRESTLING
Virginia downs Appalachian State
BOONE, N.C. — The No. 20 Virginia wrestling team won its seventh-consecutive dual match Saturday evening, downing Appalachian State 29-12 at Varsity Gymnasium. The Cavaliers (9-1) claimed victories at seven of 10 weight classes in a dominating team win over the Mountaineers (11-4), who had clinched the Southern Conference regular-season championship Friday night.
The Cavaliers scored bonus points in four of their wins, highlighted by a Vinny Waldhauser pin of Jesse Johnson at 174 pounds. UVa also racked up a technical fall and two major decisions. The Cavaliers wrap up the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 19, with a pair of home duals at Memorial Gymnasium. UVa will wrestle No. 25 Old Dominion at 2 p.m. and George Mason at 4 p.m.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Virginia falls to Northwestern in NTI Opener
The ninth-ranked Virginia women’s tennis team dropped its opening match of the 2012 ITA National Team Indoor Championships, falling 4-2 to No. 12 Northwestern late Friday night at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season.
The Cavaliers opened the match strong by winning the doubles point. The Wildcats rallied in singles, winning three matches in straight sets to take a 3-1 lead. Virginia answered with Emily Fraser’s 6-0, 7-6(3) win at No. 1 to cut the lead to 3-2. Northwestern clinched the match at No. 5, where Abu Mushrefova scored a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Erin Vierra.
Virginia will continue play at the tournament in the consolation draw today. The Cavaliers will meet Georgia Tech at 6:30 p.m. Admission to the tournament is free.
